Part I The Basement & the Parlor — Chapter Five
Overview
Senlin wakes in a squalid Basement flophouse to find he has been robbed, though his hidden money and train tickets remain. Exploring the cavernous city, he confronts the Tower’s grimy reality, regroups with a new suit, then spots a merchant carrying his stolen satchel and Marya’s silks. Attempting a bold ambush outside the clothier, Senlin is swiftly countered and kicked, underscoring his vulnerability and the hazards of the Basement.
Summary
Senlin awakens in a dank flophouse to a parrot’s scream, disoriented and filthy from his passage into the Basement. He discovers his satchel, Marya’s silks, and coins stolen, though his hidden money and the train tickets tucked in his guidebook survive. Angry and embarrassed, he blames himself for trusting Adam and resolves to press on.
Venturing into the cavernous Basement city, Senlin observes sweating pipes, giant snails clinging to the ceiling, and crowds orbiting beer fountains. Drawn by hunger and thirst, he watches a pedal-powered merry-go-round that dispenses beer, helps a tossed drunk, and realizes how far he has fallen in appearance and authority.
Determined to restore some dignity, Senlin buys a practical black suit and boots, stashing most of his funds in his footwear. In the clothier’s shop, a diminutive, animated merchant argues with the tailor over selling women’s silks, while Senlin quietly completes his purchase.
As Senlin turns to leave, he spots his own satchel on the merchant’s shoulder and recognizes Marya’s silks. Emboldened, he sets an ambush outside the shop and seizes the man by the collar, only to be felled by a sharp kick to the groin. The failed gambit highlights Senlin’s inexperience with confrontation and the Basement’s unforgiving rules.
