Part I The Basement & the Parlor — Chapter Fifteen
Overview
Through a freezing night, Senlin promises to support Edith as she faces “ostracization.” In the morning, Ceph upholds the verdict; Edith accepts branding rather than more confinement. After the ordeal, Ceph astonishingly admits the Parlor is a performance. Senlin, rattled but focused on Marya, proceeds toward the Baths.
Summary
Before dawn in the exterior coop, Senlin and Edith huddle for warmth and talk. Edith explains the Parlor’s allure—life there has a plot—then asks Senlin not to leave her during the “ostracization.” He promises support, believing the Registrar will relent.
At morning, Assistant Ceph repeats the verdict: Edith will be expelled. Senlin denounces the cruelty, arguing conscience over policy; Ceph counters with dogma about constancy and law. Exhausted and fearful of endless confinement, Edith chooses to proceed.
Ceph leads them to a white-tiled ward that proves a torture chamber for exiles. Amid muffled suffering, a nurse prepares a heated brand. Senlin holds Edith’s hand as the iron sears her forearm; she endures in silence before blacking out.
Ceph forces Senlin to leave, despite his wish to stay. Dazed, Senlin dresses, resolves repeatedly to return, but reminds himself of Marya and moves on, aiming for the Baths.
At the stairwell to the Baths, Ceph unexpectedly confesses admiration and ambitions, then reveals the twist: he is an actor, and the Parlor’s ordeals are roles and performances. Senlin, stunned by the revelation and the day’s brutality, continues upward, determined to find Marya.
