Part III New Babel — Chapter Four
Overview
Finn Goll reveals he has been manipulating Thomas Senlin’s ascent as a recruitment test and offers him the vacant Port Master job. After a tense debate over trust, power, and Marya’s fate, Senlin accepts for the money and access it promises. He is left at the chaotic port and unexpectedly reconciles with his former mugger, Adam, now a colleague.
Summary
In a luxurious carriage, Thomas Senlin awakens to find Finn Goll transformed from humble merchant to polished power broker, with the amazon Iren guarding him. Goll mocks Senlin’s misadventures and denounces guidebooks, declaring the Tower a trap none escape. Senlin insists he and Marya will go home.
Goll reveals he seeded multiple "candidates" in the Basement, testing them by hardship, and now wants Senlin as Port Master of Goll’s Port. He argues that trust is for the weak and urges Senlin to accept loss, claiming Marya is gone. Senlin counters that Marya was taken by Count Pell and he intends to retrieve her.
Provoked, Goll cues Iren to violently shake Senlin, but Senlin reaffirms his resolve. Goll lists other literate candidates and warns that desperate men abound. Senlin recognizes he needs money and time to find Marya and agrees to discuss terms rather than be coerced.
Goll details the job: organizing dockworkers, handling inspections, pricing and trading goods, managing shifts, balancing ledgers, paying men, and delivering the Eight O’Clock Report. Senlin accepts a salary of one mina a month with room and board. They shake hands warily, each committed only to a convenient illusion of partnership.
At the weigh station, Goll departs, leaving Senlin alone amid port chaos. Senlin is then confronted by Adam Boreas, the mugger who once ruined him. Seeing Adam beaten down, Senlin offers reconciliation. They exchange names and handshakes; Adam warns, "You have no friends," and Senlin deflects with humor, hinting at tentative alliance.
