Part I The Basement & the Parlor — Chapter Two
Overview
After two frantic days in the shifting Market, Thomas Senlin realizes he still holds Marya’s return ticket, stranding her. Exhausted and desperate, he drifts toward the Tower and learns from Adam Boreas about the Skirts, where debris from above often falls. Admitting his failure, Senlin confesses he has lost his wife.
Summary
Thomas Senlin rests at the Tower’s base after two sleepless days searching for Marya, surviving on costly water and pistachios. He delays writing in his notebook, ashamed of the chaos, and clutches The Everyman’s Guide while guarding a bundle of women’s garments bought during his search. A sudden check of his satchel reveals he still has both train tickets.
Senlin recalls how, after Marya’s trunk was stolen, he waited at the original stall through the night, only to watch the Market transform as vendors packed up and new ones took their place. Realizing Marya could never find the same spot again, he begins a systematic search, buying silks and stockings to prompt questions about a woman in a red helmet. Despite scouring the crowd and chasing any flash of red, he finds nothing.
By the second night his order collapses into panic. He calculates their money and concludes Marya cannot afford passage home because he holds her return ticket, effectively stranding her. Drawn closer to the Tower, he notices a clear buffer of empty ground around its base and wonders at it.
An acrobatic young man, Adamos "Adam" Boreas, approaches and explains the Skirts: debris from any ring falls here, making the area deadly. This contradicts Senlin’s faith in the Tower’s perfection and the assurances of his Guide. When Adam asks about the bundle of silks and Marya’s whereabouts, Senlin, parched and ashamed, finally admits he has lost his wife.
