Part III New Babel — Chapter Five

Overview

Senlin records his first weeks as Port Master under Finn Goll, battling chaos, theft, and vice while enforcing order with Iren’s help. He fires Tommo, earns wary compliance, and uncovers Adam’s link to Voleta at Goll’s Steam Pipe. Tempted by White Chrom yet resisting, Senlin’s resolve crystallizes: he will take a ship to resume the search for Marya.

Summary

In dated journal entries, Thomas Senlin details inheriting a failing port: drunken men, broken equipment, missing wine, and endless ledgers. He hides Ogier’s key and places Marya’s painting by his bed, torn between hope and pain.

Choosing an example to establish authority, Senlin—backed by Iren—fires Chief Stevedore Tommo Carric for theft. Iren physically removes and humiliates Tommo, and Senlin publicly declares the culprit dismissed, winning a tentative reset with the crew while plotting to lull Finn Goll and eventually escape.

Senlin assumes additional duties inspecting ships for smuggled cargo, describing New Babel’s hydrogen industry contrasted with Goll’s true trade: vice. He is disturbed by shipments of trafficked women and notes Goll’s venue, the Steam Pipe, run by the dangerous Rodion.

After cleaning house and firing loafers, Senlin relies on Adam Boreas, who reveals Goll orchestrated the initial mugging scheme. Senlin’s nightly readings for illiterate workers become popular. A lurid flyer for the Steam Pipe features “The Amazing Voleta,” which rattles Adam; Senlin later realizes Voleta is Adam’s sister.

When Iren arrives for Goll’s daily report, Senlin inadvertently exposes her illiteracy, provoking her anger and a bruising reminder of her power. A shipment of White Chrom tempts Senlin with visions of Marya, but he resists by seeking company.

Finally, a captain delivers ice-packed oysters, proving improbable logistics possible. Profits flow, but the revelation is larger: with a ship, miracles—and finding Marya—are feasible. Senlin resolves to maintain his façade for Goll, then seize a ship to continue his search.
