Part I The Basement & the Parlor — Chapter Four
Overview
An airship crashes near the Tower, and the Market swarms the wreck for loot, shocking Thomas Senlin. Adam Boreas pulls Senlin away, predicting vultures will do the burying, and leads him into the Tower via a suffocating tunnel to the Basement. A classroom flashback contrasts Senlin’s naive expectations with grim reality, marking a sobering start to his ascent.
Summary
A red dust cloud engulfs Thomas Senlin and Adam Boreas as debris rains down from a crashing airship. When the air clears, Senlin sees mangled bodies and shattered hull. Instead of rescue, Market-goers surge in and strip the wreck, shouting claims and carting off everything of value. The spectacle horrifies Senlin, who yearns for civility amid chaos.
As the Tower’s shadow falls, Senlin asks who will bury the dead. Adam answers, “The vultures,” and urges departure. He fashions a belt tether and leads Senlin toward the entrance to the Basement. Senlin glimpses the dark-eyed woman still reading the letters of the lost by candlelight, a quiet counterpoint to the surrounding ruthlessness.
The narrative cuts to a classroom months earlier, where Headmaster Senlin lectures on the Tower’s massive walls, ringdoms, and guarded ports. Students Ms. Stubbs and Mr. Gregor illustrate his tidy analogies, revealing Senlin’s confidence in order, documentation, and controlled exploration—assumptions that flatter his imagination.
Returning to the present, the entrance tunnel proves nightmarish: a smoky mineshaft where inbound and outbound crowds collide. Senlin is jostled, choked by soot, and nearly panics, clinging to Adam’s belt. He reassures himself the misery must be an anomaly, a failure of mechanisms or a servant’s entrance, but the grind continues.
At last the crush loosens, air slightly clears, and Senlin stumbles onto cobblestones within the Tower’s first cavernous ringdom, the Basement. Exhausted and shaken, he recognizes he has not reached a grand culmination but only the true beginning of his search for Marya.
