Overview
Senlin and Edith navigate the Parlor’s false rooms toward the kitchen exit, arming themselves with a real shield. Mayfair ambushes them, firing his musket; Senlin is stunned but recovers to rescue Edith and escape into the staff corridor. Amid chaotic butlers, Mayfair corners them again and shoots, escalating the peril.
Summary
Senlin and Edith reach Edith’s locked bedroom and move toward the foyer, aiming for the kitchen exit. Recognizing the house’s many dead ends, they decide to use a wall-mounted shield as a battering ram. Senlin leads with the heavy shield while Edith follows, both wary of Mayfair’s possible ambush.
As they pass the study, Mayfair appears in the kitchen doorway carrying a ham and a musket. A brief classroom memory of Senlin lecturing on instinct underscores his shift from reason to survival. He charges with the shield, but Mayfair fires; the shot dents the shield and smashes Senlin back, dazing him.
Regaining awareness, Senlin sees Mayfair dragging a half-conscious Edith along the dining table and pawing at her. Senlin seizes a poker and strikes Mayfair at the neck-shoulder notch, dropping him. He helps the bleeding Edith to her feet and they stagger into the kitchen, determined to escape.
They unlock the door marked “I” and tumble into the butlers’ hallway, startling a crowd of attendants. The corridor erupts into confusion: some butlers maintain their act, others panic or accuse. As Senlin and Edith press through, Mayfair reappears at the end of the cleared hall, aims the musket, and fires into the chaos, leaving their fate in immediate jeopardy.
