Chapter 33
Overview
Nora and Libby finally confront their anger and fears, revealing that Libby hoped Nora would follow her move. Libby urges Nora to pursue the dream editing job at Loggia, and they agree to stop fixing each other and accept the pain. The family spends a gentle day together, savoring their remaining time.
Summary
At dawn on the cottage steps, Nora and Libby face each other after a night of tears. Libby apologizes for not telling Nora sooner about moving and admits she tried to “win” Nora over to Sunshine Falls. Nora challenges the secrecy, and Libby explains she wanted Nora to want this life too.
Nora reveals she was asked to apply for Charlie’s former editor job at Loggia. Libby insists Nora must pursue her dream and promises support if it fails, reversing their lifelong dynamic. Both sisters allow themselves to break down together, acknowledging that their bond endures even as their lives diverge.
They agree not to “fix” the situation but to name the pain: it sucks, and they will survive it as sisters. The realization anchors them in the moment and reframes their connection as resilient, not dependent on proximity.
Later, Brendan meets the home inspector while Libby, Nora, and the girls spend the day together. They hike, pet horses, pick blackberries, and plan a pie, savoring the two and a half months they have left before the move. Nora reflects that she can still be a city person and also find multiple homes with the people she loves.
