Chapter 21
Overview
Nora has a panic attack after Libby’s criticism, and Charlie grounds her with empathy and candor, revealing his hidden family history and feelings of inadequacy. Their connection intensifies to the brink of a kiss before Libby’s texts interrupt. Sally passes along a number for Libby, and Gertie drives them home, while Nora reexamines Libby’s odd behavior.
Summary
Alone in Charlie’s childhood room, Nora spirals after Libby’s remark that she has no life. Charlie finds Nora and steadies her with gentle humor and touch, validating her intensity as care rather than coldness. Their mutual pull grows as Charlie admits he’s always watching her and admires her conviction.
Prompted by Nora’s self-doubt, Charlie opens up about his past: a nontraditional parentage revealed cruelly by classmates, small-town judgment, his mother’s unpredictability, and years split between fights and the library. He reframes Nora’s reliability as a strength and insists Libby won’t abandon her.
Their attraction escalates; Nora tells Charlie he’s far from a disappointment. They hover on the edge of a kiss until Nora’s phone chimes with texts from Libby, breaking the moment. Charlie, flustered, encourages Nora to find her sister, and they part for the night.
Downstairs, Sally hands Nora a phone number for Libby. Outside, Gertie Park gives Nora and Libby a ride home. In the car, Nora catalogs recent red flags—Libby’s secrecy, mood shifts, and Brendan’s odd texts—trying to plan for unknowns, but she holds onto the rare calm she felt with Charlie.
