Chapter 24
Overview
Nora secures Dusty for a virtual book-club fundraiser to save Goode Books while Libby spearheads Blue Moon Ball prep. Sneaking time alone, Nora and Charlie deepen their bond, confronting his family tensions, his past with Amaya, and shared disinterest in having children. Nora confides fears about Libby’s possible divorce, and Charlie commits to being present.
Summary
Nora calls Dusty to request help with a Goode Books fundraiser and secures her agreement to host an online book club for buyers. Around town, Libby leads Blue Moon Ball preparations, while Nora and Charlie keep their growing relationship quiet, communicating professionally by email but stealing private moments in the shop.
To escape prying eyes, Nora and Charlie run to Target, then return to the cottage to set up a backyard tent for Libby’s plan. As they work, Charlie reveals his father’s dismissive reaction to him staying in town and his sense of uselessness compared to his cousin Shepherd. Nora reassures him, highlighting his reliability and organization.
Relaxing in the tent, Nora asks about Amaya. Charlie explains their high school romance, failed long-distance attempt, and breakup, followed by Amaya dating his cousin Shepherd. He voices insecurity about being the less-desired archetype, while Nora counters that happiness isn’t confined to tropes.
They discuss children and agree neither wants them. Feeling safe, Nora admits she suspects Libby is divorcing Brendan and feels powerless to help. Charlie comforts her, suggesting presence may be enough, and Nora reflects that the same could be true for Charlie’s father.
Nora asks Charlie to be here despite his father’s wishes. Charlie kisses her and promises he will, affirming their growing commitment as they hold each other in the tent.
