Chapter 30
Overview
Nora spends the night with Charlie but, triggered by past trauma with ex Jakob and her mother’s death, admits she can’t stay over. She confides her panic and control issues; Charlie responds with care and flexibility, deepening their bond. The next day, Nora debates love versus ambition with Libby before Brendan and the girls arrive, reaffirming Libby’s family stability.
Summary
After an intimate night, Charlie asks Nora to stay. Panic rises, and Nora chooses honesty, revealing her history with Jakob: being with him the night their mother died, missing Libby’s calls, his later departure for a residency, her panic attacks, and his eventual breakup. She explains how grief bred control and made sleeping away from home terrifying.
Charlie listens without judgment, reframes Jakob’s exit as abandonment, and promises to take Nora home at any hour if she needs. Buoyed by his steadiness, Nora decides not to stay the night but lingers; they have slow, tender sex, and she privately recognizes she is falling in love with Charlie.
In the morning, Nora tells Libby everything. Libby urges her to explore the relationship despite distance, but Nora insists love won’t resolve conflicting needs, naming her New York life, safety, and ambition. She masks the depth of her feelings, calling them hypothetical.
That afternoon, Brendan arrives with daughters Bea and Tala. The family’s reunion is emotional but grounding; Libby and Brendan appear secure together. Nora delights in her nieces, feeling relief that Libby’s household is stable even as Nora weighs love against the life she’s built.
