Chapter 32
Overview
After learning Libby plans to move, Nora unravels at Goode Books, where Charlie holds her through the night and insists she choose her own wants. They reaffirm their connection, share intimate memories, and sleep together. By morning, they cautiously agree to try to make a future work despite constraints.
Summary
Nora, devastated by Libby’s plan to move, cries in the darkened bookstore where Charlie holds her. She voices her fear of being left and of losing control, linking it to past losses. Charlie counters that Libby loves her and that Nora isn’t to blame, affirming that Nora is enough.
Charlie admits Sunshine Falls makes him feel claustrophobic and unseen, but says Nora changed that, making it possible for him to breathe. He tells Nora she’s perfect to him and urges her not to change for anyone, including Libby. When Nora suggests staying, Charlie refuses to let her sacrifice her needs, insisting she pursue the city, the Loggia job, and even his apartment if it helps.
They spend the night at the shop so neither feels alone. In the quiet, they trade stories about Nora’s mother and the sisters’ December twelfth bookstore ritual, deepening their bond. Their intimacy resumes, and afterward Charlie whispers that maybe they can figure it out, acknowledging the unspoken negotiation of their relationship.
By morning, they accept a fragile hope: despite obligations and distance, they will try. Charlie tells Nora she will always be okay, reinforcing her worth and the possibility of a shared future, even if the path remains uncertain.
