Chapter 23
Overview
Nora discovers a law firm number tied to Libby and concludes her sister may be considering divorce, triggering memories of their grief and Nora’s protective resolve. She decides to support Libby quietly. Over dinner, Libby pitches a Blue Moon Ball fundraiser to save Goode Books, and Nora agrees to secure Dusty for a virtual Q&A.
Summary
Leaving the library exhilarated and shaken, Nora checks her messages and sees photos of Goode Books’ transformation. Intending to decline Shepherd kindly, she misdials and reaches a family law firm. Realizing the number Sally gave Libby matches the firm, Nora concludes Libby may have sought a divorce attorney.
The discovery hurls Nora into memories of their mother’s death and Libby’s collapse. She recalls whisking Libby to Los Angeles to survive their grief, cementing Nora’s lifelong role as protector and the fear that drives her workaholism and need for control.
Grounding herself, Nora forms an action plan: find a top divorce lawyer, secure housing, arrange counseling, exact only figurative revenge if needed, and most importantly, make Libby feel safe enough to open up.
At Poppa Squat’s, Nora invites honesty, but Libby deflects. Instead, Libby proposes a Blue Moon Ball—an outdoor fundraiser to save Goode Books—with community volunteers, music, a bake sale, Mug and Shot as a soda fountain, and a bar. She asks Nora to get Dusty for a virtual Q&A and signed stock.
Recognizing this as what Libby wants—and a way to steady her—Nora agrees to ask Dusty. Libby’s joy reassures Nora, who resolves to quietly support and protect her sister while the event takes shape.
