Chapter 35

Overview

The town festival brings closure and heartbreak. Nora parts kindly with Shepherd, then shares a tender dance with Charlie where they exchange I-love-yous but decide against long distance. After Charlie slips away without a goodbye, Nora confronts Clint about letting Charlie help, and recognizes her own habit of living at "half volume."

Summary

The Blue Moon festivities fill the town square with food, music, and dancing. Nora, Libby, Brendan, and the girls stop by Goode Books for Dusty’s virtual event, then roam the celebration, indulging in sweets and watching the community come together. Nora notes Libby’s growing comfort here and steps back to observe.

Shepherd approaches, and Nora apologizes for misleading him. He accepts the truth with grace and departs, noting Nora’s obvious feelings for Charlie. Moments later, Charlie arrives with a flannel he bought because it was on Nora’s list, and they share easy intimacy as he helps her into it.

On the dance floor, while “Carolina in My Mind” plays, Nora and Charlie hold each other and talk around their impending separation. Imagining the realities of work, family obligations, and canceled visits, Nora admits she loves Charlie too much to attempt a long-distance relationship. Charlie says he loves her and, if he loved her less, he would try to keep her in Sunshine Falls; instead, he accepts that “real life” won’t bend. They agree their moment was perfect, and Charlie leaves without a formal goodbye.

On her way out, Nora runs into Clint Lastra. After small talk, Clint confides that Charlie “shouldn’t be here” and fears Charlie won’t be happy. Nora counters that Charlie wants to help and warns Clint not to make his son feel like the wrong kind of person. Clint recalls seeing Charlie come alive in New York, calling that life full volume, and admits Charlie has seemed different—more himself—lately. Nora recognizes her own pattern of living at “half volume” and leaves Clint with a plea to let Charlie help.
