Chapter 36
Overview
Nora finishes the first step of a job interview, then spends her final days in New York with Libby before Libby’s family moves. The parting is painful but loving, and Libby calls moments after leaving. Nora commits to staying in NYC while their relationship adapts, embracing compromise and growth.
Summary
After completing the first step of a job interview, Nora meets Libby outside and tries to temper expectations while Libby insists Nora will get it. They dive into a farewell checklist, spending frequent time together with Brendan and the girls, making memories across the city as Libby prepares to move.
In November, Libby’s family departs early in a U-Haul. Nora and Brendan share a brief goodbye so Nora and Libby can have privacy. The sisters acknowledge how much the moment hurts while affirming the good ahead: Libby’s bigger home and small-town life, future visits, and traditions they will continue together.
As the truck pulls away, Nora breaks down on the stoop, fully feeling the loss and her decision to stay. A passing stranger wordlessly offers a tissue, and Nora recognizes a New York milestone: openly experiencing emotion in public as part of her commitment to the city.
Minutes later, Libby calls just to say hi. Nora describes the ordinary New York scene around her, which feels like home. They accept that each wanted the other to choose differently but celebrate that both are pursuing what they need. Nora embraces a view of love built on flexible compromises that allow space to grow.
