Chapter 9
Overview
Nora recounts how her mother’s betrayal and death, followed by Jakob’s departure and financial strain, forged her rule-bound approach to love. In the present, Libby disapproves of Nora’s kiss with Charlie. Nora reveals Dusty’s thinly veiled portrayal of her, underscoring Nora’s loss of control, then heads out, reaffirming closeness with Libby.
Summary
Nora recalls being twelve when her mother dated a showrunner who reconciled with his wife, getting Nora’s mother’s TV role killed off. Witnessing her mother’s devastation, Nora vowed never to fall in love. Years later, Jakob made her feel alive, and she moved in with him just before her mother died, leaving Nora and Libby with mounting bills.
Facing rent, utilities, and debt, Nora moved back with Libby and scrambled for income, juggling jobs and budgeting. Jakob left for a residency, and the breakup reinforced Nora’s resolve to avoid attachments. She limited herself to first dates for practicality, guarded against feelings, and focused on building a secure life for her and Libby.
Observing others’ compromises and heartbreaks, Nora formalized strict dating rules to protect her independence and career, avoiding colleagues, unknowns, and men she wouldn’t date seriously. Those rules held—until her impulsive kiss with Charlie Lastra.
In the present, over a hot morning breakfast, Libby chastises Nora for kissing her “Professional Nemesis,” insisting this trip should be for trying new things, not old patterns. They banter about magnets and past types, with Libby warning that “that type of man” hasn’t worked for Nora.
Nora blames “Nadine Winters,” then shows Libby an email from Dusty containing pages clearly modeled on Nora, which Libby dubs “Nora Stephens fan fiction.” They joke about smuttiness and crushes, lightening the tension while underscoring Nora’s discomfort at being caricatured.
Nora wraps breakfast and heads out to find better Wi‑Fi for work. Before leaving, she promises Libby she won’t visit local spots without her, signaling their renewed closeness and Nora’s intent to prioritize their bond amid the destabilizing pull toward Charlie.
