Chapter 19
Overview
Libby surprises Nora with a community theater production that is hilariously miscast, giving the sisters a rare night of carefree laughter. Afterward, Sally Goode invites them to a lively post-show gathering at her home. There, Nora senses Libby is hiding deeper troubles and fears marital strain, just as Shepherd reenters the picture.
Summary
Libby blindfolds Nora and reveals a surprise: the Sunshine Falls Community Theater’s staging of Once in a Lifetime. In the school gym, the production is wildly miscast—Old Man Whittaker is played by a child, while Mrs. Wilder appears far older—sending Nora and Libby into barely contained, silent hysterics that reconnect them.
After the show, as they try to slip out, Sally Goode approaches with her husband, Clint, and warmly invites them to a post-show salon of drinks and pie. Nora and Libby, still giddy, accept. At the Lastra-Goode home, Libby admires the cozy setting but suddenly seems strained, prompting Nora’s concern.
Inside, Sally explains the local custom of “pretending it was good” until everyone’s had a few rounds. Libby brushes off Nora’s worries, blaming restless leg and urging Nora to enjoy the trip. Nora’s anxiety spikes as she interprets Libby’s checklist—building, baking, bookstore, marketing—as attempts to reenter work or test independence, hinting at possible marital strain with Brendan despite the pregnancy.
Seeking distraction, Nora takes in the gathering, noting Clint and, across the room, Shepherd. As Shepherd approaches with easy charm, Nora’s simmering concerns about Libby collide with the reappearance of the handsome local, underscoring the small-town entanglements now pulling at her life.
