Chapter 37
Overview
Nora marks her mother’s birthday at Freeman Books and unexpectedly reunites with Charlie. Libby has taken over Goode Books, freeing Charlie to move to New York with his parents’ blessing. Charlie and Nora confess their love, choose a shared city future, and the long-distance conflict ends.
Summary
On December twelfth, Nora keeps her annual tradition of honoring her mother by visiting Freeman Books. Now an editor at Loggia, she relishes her new role but lets herself miss Charlie as she browses for a romance to buy, planning to share it with Libby despite their physical distance.
While selecting a book, Nora reaches for the same title as another shopper and discovers it is Charlie. Stunned, she learns he is her “present” orchestrated by Libby. Charlie explains that Libby, Sally, and Clint visited Goode Books with a persuasive plan—complete with a PowerPoint—to reunite him and Nora.
Charlie reveals that his father graduated early from physical therapy, his parents want him happy, and Sally even jokes about a future daughter-in-law. Crucially, Libby has taken over Goode Books, with the girls spending time there and Tala keeping customers engaged, ensuring the store thrives without Charlie’s daily presence.
Freed by family support and the new arrangement, Charlie proposes moving back to New York, finding work in editing, agenting, or writing, while Nora continues rising at Loggia. He paints a future where Libby’s family settles in Sunshine Falls and he and Nora build a full, busy city life together.
Nora and Charlie kiss in the bookstore, trade playful affirmations, and confess their love openly. With the distance resolved, they commit to a shared future in New York, closing the loop on their long-standing tension between duty, place, and love.
