Chapter 27
Overview
After Libby collapses, Nora and Charlie rush her to the hospital. As Nora unravels, Charlie takes charge and reveals his father’s stroke history, deepening their bond. The doctor diagnoses Libby with pregnancy-related anemia, treatable with supplements and diet, easing the immediate fear and resetting Nora’s sense of control.
Summary
Libby collapses at the office, and Nora catches her as they fall. Charlie rushes in, insists on the hospital, and drives them there. While Libby is taken for tests, Charlie calms Nora, gets updates, and keeps her fed and hydrated, as Nora struggles with fear and helplessness.
Waiting in the hallway, Nora recalls past moments of holding it together for Libby after their mother’s death, and now feels useless. Charlie stays despite his discomfort with hospitals, holding Nora and reassuring her. He admits he contacted Sharon about a job for Nora, then affirms her talents and reliability.
To distract and comfort Nora, Charlie shares his father’s stroke history and how this hospital helped, exposing his own vulnerability and loss. Their emotional intimacy deepens as Nora leans on him, and he promises they will figure out what’s wrong with Libby and fix it.
The doctor arrives and explains Libby is anemic from iron and B12 deficiency, a pregnancy-related condition that was present, though milder, in her previous pregnancy. The treatment plan includes supplements, dietary changes, smaller meals, and follow-up appointments. Nora reels at having missed earlier signs but is relieved it’s manageable.
As Nora’s panic subsides, Charlie helps her breathe through the relief. A nurse then announces Libby is ready for visitors, and Nora, steadied by Charlie’s support and the clear plan, prepares to see her sister.
