Chapter 22
Overview
Nora meets Charlie at the library to edit Dusty’s book, their collaboration deepening both professional respect and personal tension. They address Shepherd and Amaya, admit their attraction, and choose a no-future, for-now arrangement. Passion escalates in a study room but they stop short, agreeing to pursue it deliberately, raising the emotional stakes.
Summary
Nora arrives at the Sunshine Falls library after a strained morning with Libby, unsettled by Brendan’s chipper texts and Libby’s distance. She meets Charlie in Study Room 3C for an editing session on Dusty’s manuscript, where they trade notes and reveal growing professional synergy and admiration.
As they refine character arcs—debating Josephine’s reveal and delaying Nadine’s abandoned acting dream—Charlie challenges Nora’s pragmatism by arguing Nadine deserves a happy ending, mirroring Nora’s own sacrifices. Their workflow shifts playfully from cutting to praising, signaling deepening rapport.
Nora raises Shepherd and pointedly calls Amaya Charlie’s cousin’s counterpart, pressing him on his planned talk with his ex. Charlie insists nothing is happening with Amaya. They trade non-claims on each other’s love lives until Charlie admits his “one-item” list, and Nora confesses she wants to be with him without thinking ahead.
They agree to focus on the present; desire overtakes them and they make out urgently on the study table, pushing boundaries while keeping clothes on. Mid-passion, they confirm they can work together without concessions and that neither wants to take shortcuts.
Charlie ultimately stops, promising when they finally have sex it won’t be rushed or in public. They leave mutually committed to a deliberate, no-expectations pursuit, heightening both their connection and the risk to their carefully managed lives.
