Chapter Nineteen

Overview

At a tense menagerie lunch, Visitor Pyke and Ruko size each other up but cannot fight. Tala reports Ruko pacing the Ox orchard during the murder window, hinting he was lured and the Blade stolen to frame him. Cain drinks Pyke’s poisoned stew, survives by trick or training, and alienates the contenders. Suspicion disperses from Ruko while mistrust within the group deepens.

Summary

Over lunch in the imperial menagerie, Cain jokes about power while Tala dreams of reform and Neema privately doubts her chances. Neema studies Ruko’s deadly poise and concludes he is the true threat. Visitor Pyke arrives in proxy uniform; he and Ruko assume stances but refrain from fighting to avoid an international incident.

Tala quietly reveals Sunur saw Ruko pacing the Ox orchard around three in the morning, for more than an hour. Neema and Cain infer Ruko was lured to a meeting and likely told to come unarmed, creating an opening for the killer to steal the Blade and frame him. They tally alibis: Havoc trained, Shal was sick, Ruko was away, Tala had no motive, Cain claims an orgy.

Pyke discovers Cain has eaten his bowl—deadly to non-Visitors—and predicts Cain will die within minutes. Tala sprints for an antidote. Neema steadies Cain through a guided “walk” of Scartown memories as he sweats and convulses. Minutes pass; Cain survives, to Pyke’s astonishment. Havoc and Shal condemn the recklessness.

Ruko coolly states Cain never truly ate the stew. The contenders recoil from Cain’s manipulations. Neema, disgusted, leaves after cursing him. Shal probes with Houndsight and insists he saw Cain eat; Cain hints at Fox expertise with poisons and deflects. The confrontation ends unsettled, with Tala returning late with the antidote and raging at Cain.

The net effect: Ruko gains a partial alibi suggesting a deliberate lure and Blade theft, Pyke’s lethal presence raises stakes, and Cain’s stunt fractures trust among contenders while obscuring his own capabilities.
