Chapter Fifty-Three
Overview
Vabras cancels the morning bouts, issues a condensed fight card, and pointedly threatens Tala over her family’s unauthorized flight. The schedule appears designed to help Ruko recover after Havoc’s withdrawal. Shal notes Samran Hounds counter-trained against Houndsight. In the Monkey exhibition, Neema’s calligraphy—submitted by Vabras—is lavishly praised and politically misinterpreted by nobles.
Summary
The contenders arrive to find the Festival Square emptied of stalls and the platform dismantled, replaced by Samran Hounds drilling in uncanny unison. Vabras announces the morning fights are canceled and hands out a new schedule consolidating all four bouts into the afternoon, with a break for Ruko’s funeral.
Tala snaps at being informed last, and Vabras retaliates by revealing her wife left the island with their child without permission, threatening charges of sedition while stressing the emperor’s indifference—for now. He pointedly reduces the contenders to Guardian names on the schedule and notes the Fox and Hound each fight twice.
Vabras then chides Neema for failing to submit work for the Monkey exhibition and reveals he sent six of her calligraphy pieces from the imperial archives. As Cain comforts the shaken Tala, Shal confides that the Samran Hounds have been counter-trained to appear blank to Houndsight, and he doubts the claim that Gaida killed herself. Neema hints Katsan will carry a message to the Bears and observes the schedule seems designed to let Ruko recover, implying imperial favor after Havoc’s ordered withdrawal.
Shal admits he submitted watercolours evoking Dolrun to imply Yana’s fate without depicting it. Neema, deciding to face the exhibition, heads to the Monkey palace for the first half of the Sixth Trial.
At the exhibition, Lady Harmony Arbell-Ranor rhapsodizes over Neema’s mounted scrolls, declaring one experimental ancient-style rendering of a modern poem a “great work,” insisting it yearns for a return to a golden age. Neema denies the reading, but Lady Harmony and Lord Clarion condescend, crediting higher meaning beyond the artist’s intent and linking Neema’s schooling to a Venerant teacher. They drift away to view Tala’s pottery, leaving Neema praised yet politically misread.
