Chapter Fifty-One
Overview
Cain wakes mysteriously healed and is lured by a sentient book into a fable revealing the Fox Guardian’s method of inhabiting humans—ending with the Fox choosing an abandoned baby named Cain. Shaken, Cain rejects the book, which transforms into a raven and taunts him, confirming a dangerous truth about his nature.
Summary
Cain sleeps on his balcony, his injuries knitting in unnerving, selective ways. On the railing, Sol—the solitary raven fragment—preens while the flocked Raven warns him off Cain. Sol boasts he will stop the Tiger warrior and make Neema queen, then pointedly lands on Cain’s chest, declaring he must first remove rivals.
Cain wakes before dawn feeling miraculously mended. Hearing his name called, he finds a warm, pepper-scented book on his bed: Tales of the Raven. Ignoring a visceral warning, he opens it to an illustrated fox in a trap and begins a story, assuming it a gift from Neema.
The fable tells how the Fox Guardian tricked its way across the border by securing a little girl’s invitation, then revealed its unpleasant true aspect. Hunted, it fled and later sought to return home but was told by the Raven that time had soaked into it. Offered a loophole—live as half-Fox, half-human, reborn through hosts—the Fox agreed.
After centuries inhabiting humans by night, the Fox sought a new host in Scartown. It protected a baby abandoned on a freezing rubbish tip, then chose him. In the morning the Scrappers found the child alive under a ravaged rat and named him Cain.
Back in Cain’s room, the page stains and asks, “ARE YOU SURE?” Horrified by the familiarity of the memory—warm fur, rubbish-stink, blood—Cain hurls the book from the balcony. It transforms midair into a raven that circles and jeers “Fox! Fox!” before vanishing, leaving Cain shaken by the implication that he is the Fox’s human host.
