Chapter Seventy-Eight

Overview

The Fox, possessing Vabras, massacres an escort, then reveals it evaded the binding when a selfless fragment was captured instead. It occupied Vabras through his moment of emptiness. Neema and Cain escape via the Guardian Gate as the Fox dozes, allowing Vabras to reawaken—bloody and dangerous.

Summary

Amid a field of twenty-four butchered bodies, the Fox—wearing Vabras’s form—blithely blames the slaughter on a triggered prey drive. Neema is horrified, while Cain retches, unable to stomach the carnage. The Fox contrasts Cain’s restraint with Vabras’s latent hunger for chaos, unsettling Neema’s certainty about Vabras’s devotion to order.

Neema presses the Fox about the Dragon-binding spell. The Fox explains it escaped because only a fragment—“Cornered Vixen, Defending her Cubs to the Death”—was trapped, having sacrificed itself. The main self slipped free. It then seized Vabras when he felt a hollow ache searching for his missing cat, finding an opening to occupy him.

Growing drowsy, the Fox begins compulsively organizing the remains, an echo of Vabras’s need for order. Neema warns that if the Fox sleeps, Vabras will awaken and kill them. Cain refuses the idea of letting the Fox re-enter him, and Neema and Cain carefully back away to avoid reigniting the Fox’s predatory drive.

As the Fox tidies and yawns, it half-dismisses them with a lazy wave of Vabras’s sword. Seizing the moment, Neema and Cain run and sprint through the open Guardian Gate. The Fox finally slips into sleep, and Vabras awakens in his own body, head pounding and mouth tasting of someone else’s blood.
