Chapter Fifty-Four
Overview
In a rigged bout, Vabras skews scoring and Ish Fort arms Cain with daggers. The Fox seizes Cain mid-fight, leading to Neema’s throat injury before Cain regains control. Afterward, Cain reveals he contains all Foxes and fears losing himself, while Neema chooses trust.
Summary
Neema and Cain spar in a public bout. Neema intends to lose, but their banter and grappling draw attention. Despite Cain’s dominance, Vabras awards the first round to Neema, provoking the crowd and rattling Cain.
Ish Fort confronts Cain, pressing daggers on him despite an agreed baton fight. In round two, Neema defends with war fans. Cain apologizes as he attacks, but a presence intrudes: the Fox. Cain’s eyes turn yellow, and he throws a dagger. Neema hesitates, trusting Cain, and nicks her own neck deflecting the strike. Mid-leap, Cain regains himself, aborts a killing blow, and lands beside her as the bell ends the round. Vabras declares victory for Cain.
Medics treat Neema’s sliced throat, saying she narrowly missed an artery. Cain, devastated, insists he lost control. Neema identifies the true cause: the Fox acted through him. Cain admits a Raven-like book-bird visited him and revealed the Fox’s nature—living by moving between hosts.
Cain confesses he carries not a fragment but all the Foxes—past, present, and future—long hidden but now awake with him. He feels the Fox testing boundaries and fears it could take over. Neema asserts her trust and refuses to fear him; Cain warns he cannot trust himself.
