Chapter Sixty-Six
Overview
The Fox, in Cain’s body, asserts dominance in the aftermath of the Dragon Trial, terrifying staff and subjugating Abbot Fort. It demands changes to its altar, lies about Cain’s condition, and orders Fort into hiding, signaling imminent danger and consolidating the Fox’s covert control.
Summary
In the medical tent, the Fox, wearing Cain Ballari’s body, gorges on chicken soup and unsettles a nurse with its predatory attention and eerie courtesy. Fort, the Fox abbot, storms in to condemn Cain for abandoning the Dragon Trial but freezes when the Fox reveals itself, copper-lit and dangerous.
The Fox rambles about a “magic bowl,” sings its riddle, and calls Fort by his old name, Ishmahir, compelling Fort to prostrate himself. It criticizes its altar—too much incense and gold, not enough chickens—prompting Fort to promise piles of chickens.
Sensing coming trouble, the Fox orders Fort to hide, overruling Fort’s wish to stay. When Fort asks after Cain, the Fox lies that Cain is “having a marvellous time,” then bristles at further questions. Finally, the Fox draws Fort close, licks his ear, and whispers a specific hiding place.
The scene confirms the Fox’s full control, its capricious demands, and a looming threat that requires its abbot to vanish on the Fox’s secret instructions.
