Chapter Fifty-Two
Overview
At dawn the Bear Trial begins with shock-dousing, interrogation, and brutal endurance drills. Brother Joran challenges each contender’s discipline; Ruko wins, Neema places next, Cain underperforms, and Tala comes last. Havoc withdraws with a suspicious injury. After prayers for Katsan, Cain distances himself and Neema expels Sol from her body.
Summary
Before dawn, Bear warriors yank Neema from sleep with ice water and march her to the barracks for the Bear Trial. At breakfast Cain pointedly avoids talking to Neema, while Ruko arrives and Tala demands a private word. Tala shows Neema a note revealing that Sunur has left with their daughter, Suru, and blames Neema, shoving her away.
Hooded and seated for interrogation, Neema faces Brother Joran’s shifting gentleness and fury. She answers candidly about failures and family, ultimately declaring she does not want the throne, only peace. Joran remains intrigued but noncommittal and sends her out for endurance training.
Joran leads a punishing run through the evergreens with heavy packs. Neema quickly lags, falls into a ditch, and nearly gives up until Sol tortures her forward with piercing screeches. After pushing past her limits, Neema collapses; Joran ends her attempt, warning she must know her limits.
Back in the yard, Havoc announces a ligament tear and withdraws, which Neema distrusts; she accuses him of benefiting Ruko and of involvement in Gaida’s death, which he denies with veiled satisfaction. When the contenders reassemble, Joran praises discipline and names Ruko the winner, places Neema next, awards Cain three points for endurance despite poor focus, then Shal, and Tala last with a warning about fear born of love.
After receiving survival packs, all pray for the condemned Katsan as a funeral bell tolls. Cain flinches from Neema’s touch and hurries off, deepening her hurt. Alone beneath a pine, Neema confronts Sol for his cruelty during the run and orders him out; he reluctantly departs her body, leaving her truly alone.
