Chapter Eight

Overview

At the Festival’s opening banquet, Neema and Cain reunite in a brittle exchange that exposes his calculated provocations and her vulnerability. Cain flaunts a forbidden imperial-silk uniform, needles Katsan, and trades barbs with Neema before they agree to avoid each other. The Tiger contingent arrives, revealing a transformed Ruko bearing Hurun-tooth, whose chilling presence unsettles the court. Ruko fixes on Neema and summons her, tightening the web of rivalries and old wounds.

Summary

Neema arrives late to the crowded opening banquet and immediately engages Cain Ballari, masking old hurt behind courtly smiles. She notices his Fox contender uniform is an illicit copy in imperial silk and projects potential outcomes if she exposes him, all ending badly for her. Deciding against it, she obliquely acknowledges the silk; Cain taunts her about her precarious moral ground and keeps pressing for weakness.

Tala Talaka joins them, and Cain pointedly tries to tempt Katsan Brundt to drink. Katsan refuses, embodying Bear discipline, and departs. Neema explains Cain’s ploy: he appears drunk so Katsan might underestimate him later. Tala’s family moment briefly diffuses tension, but when Tala leaves, the intimacy between Neema and Cain turns sharp again.

Cain mocks Neema over her missing chameleon; she reveals it was stolen. He shifts from cruelty to flirtation, which she rebuffs. They trade jabs about principle and hypocrisy, alluding to past betrayals and a killing-for-money accusation. Neema corrects his earlier insult about the decor and notes Shal Worthy observing them; Cain resents Shal’s composed appeal.

After a bitter exchange about ideals and broken hearts, Neema and Cain agree to avoid each other for the Festival. A commotion signals the Tiger contingent’s entrance. Ruko Valit appears, utterly transformed into a severe warrior and wearing the cursed Blade of Peace, unsettling guests; a servant recoils from his gaze. Neema, shaken, voices hope he doesn’t win.

Ruko locks eyes with Neema and brazenly beckons her. Curiosity overcomes her hesitation; she goes to him as Cain is swallowed by admirers, still watching her. Gaida’s laughter rides the room, reminding Neema of old ostracism and compounding the hostile social terrain as the Trials loom.
