Chapter Fifty-Five

Overview

An uncanny, dragon-hot wind scorches the Festival Square as the Visitor returns to face Ruko in the long-awaited Tiger versus Dragon match. Cain confronts the Visitor about the Fox within him and is told to make peace or be destroyed. Tala’s fury leaves Shal injured, canceling his fight with Cain. The stage narrows to a lethal duel that could shift the Festival’s balance.

Summary

A blistering, uncanny heat grips the Festival Square, evoking Helia and Dragons. The Visitor arrives, newly austere, after days separated from his contingent as the Dragons protested. Ruko isolates himself in meditation, preparing for a decisive duel. Cain keeps distance from Neema, unsettled by his own condition.

Cain approaches the Visitor, pressing him about the Fox presence he carries. The Visitor acknowledges Cain’s power and advises reconciliation with his "guest" to restore balance, warning that failure means destruction. The Fox stirs within Cain, possessive and alert, underscoring the risk.

Tala and Shal return; Tala’s earlier rage has left Shal with a broken collarbone and cracked ribs. Medics forbid Shal from fighting Cain, ending that anticipated match. Tala shows remorse, while Shal struggles between hatred for Ruko and his faith’s demand for compassion.

As the heat intensifies, Ruko steps barefoot into the square, with the Visitor following. Though Ruko is younger and stronger, the oppressive weather seems to favor the Dragon Proxy. The onlookers fall silent as the final fight of the day—Tiger versus Dragon—begins to coalesce, with Shal offering a prayer for a swift, painless death for the doomed combatant.
