Chapter Sixty-Nine

Overview

At a brittle court celebration, Havoc replaces the imperial guard with Samran Hounds. The Fox, wearing Cain’s body, is knocked unconscious by Vabras. When Rivenna paralyzes Ruko, the emperor sings a soul-working and transforms, revealing himself as Andren Valit returned. Ruko’s accession is stalled as courtiers kneel to Andren.

Summary

Neema, uneasy at a grotesque palace party amid occupation, is taunted by Janric before Havoc diverts her to a courtyard where she reunites with Tala. Both women fear for Fenn and sense a trap. Ruko and Rivenna arrive, composed, while Havoc admits Cain is missing. They enter the throne room to find Havoc’s Samran Hounds replacing the Imperial Bodyguards, their blades bloodied.

The emperor greets Ruko as emperor-in-waiting, acknowledging the Trial’s outcome, while Neema notices Hurun-tooth at his hip and his miraculously healed right hand. Cain appears—occupied by the Fox—preening before the Guardian portraits until Vabras efficiently knocks the Fox unconscious with a pommel strike.

When Ruko demands the Blade’s return, the emperor taunts him. As Ruko moves, Rivenna stings his neck with a numbing agent, dropping him to his knees, mute and helpless. Rivenna offers Ruko as a “gift” to the emperor and pledges herself in rapture.

The emperor then sings Neema’s rediscovered Song of the Forest, its power working like a Soul Stealer. Before the assembly, his body reshapes; the Old Bear vanishes, revealing Andren Valit—the long-hidden Tiger and Great Traitor. The court collapses into reverence as Havoc forces Neema and Tala to kneel.

Andren descends to his immobilized son, gently mocking Ruko’s thwarted dream of the throne while promising that “all shall become clear.” Ruko’s accession is publicly frozen, the Blade remains with Andren, and allegiance in the room shifts decisively to the returned emperor.
