Chapter Two
Overview
The Valit family’s escorted journey to the imperial island culminates at the Dragon palace’s inner sanctum. Yana gains an unexpected ally in High Engineer Fenn Fedala and a warning from Sergeant Worthy to tell the truth. The chapter heightens dread and stakes as they enter the throne room to learn their fate.
Summary
At dawn, Yana, Ruko, and Yasila are ferried toward the imperial island under Sergeant Shal Worthy’s watch. Yana battles seasickness and is steadied by a genial Oxman who chats about the island’s self-sufficiency. As the cliffs and watchtowers loom, anticipation mixes with dread over why they have been summoned.
Processed at Eyart’s Doom, Yana rides the winch up first and asks Worthy what awaits them; he only warns her not to lie before the emperor. Crossing the dazzling Mirror Bridge barefoot after slipping, she notes the memorial to artist Shimmer Arbell, a stark reminder of the court’s peril.
At the ancient Guardian Gate, the Oxman reveals himself as Fenn Fedala, the High Engineer. He salutes her with an Ox blessing and, in veiled words, invites her to find him in the orchards if needed—an offer of discreet aid. The Gates open onto manicured lawns that look idyllic, a beauty Fenn hints can deceive.
Worthy hurries them onward. They pass playful Fox courtiers, then take a boat along the Grand Canal, gliding by the seven satellite palaces while courtiers stare and whisper. Reaching the Dragon palace’s inner sanctum, incense and silence press in. Hand in hand, Yana and Ruko step through the doors to the throne room where their fate will be decided.
