Chapter Twenty-One

Overview

In the Fox Trial’s tunnels, Neema is separated from Katsan, falls into a hat-filled trap drawn from Tala’s fear, and escapes with help from a Fox novice. She is then locked in a crushing room tied to Havoc’s nightmare and narrowly survives. Katsan, beset by doubts and a Bear vision, pointedly refuses to aid Neema. The chapter heightens rivalries and shows the Foxes exploiting contenders’ private terrors.

Summary

Neema chooses the western tunnel to avoid Katsan and what she suspects are Fox misdirections. After noting staged cobwebs and hearing distant screams, she calls for Katsan, then plunges into a shallow pit lined with hats. Two Fox novices appear above; Neema learns the trap mimics Tala Talaka’s childhood fear of drowning in hats. She tricks one novice into falling in, fashions a scarf-rope with found garments, and climbs out, leaving them to escape on their own.

Meanwhile, Katsan advances through the eastern tunnel, besieged by whispered doubts recalling her commander’s suggestion she step aside and the memory of Gaida’s support. She briefly confronts a shifting apparition of the Bear, too shaken to seek answers. Hearing Neema’s screams, Katsan hardens, curses Neema, and withholds aid, consumed by grief and uncertainty.

Intending to wait out the hour, Neema enters a storeroom marked with a chalked eternal eight. The door locks behind her, and a triggered mechanism drives opposing shelves—and the earthen walls—together. She climbs onto a shelf bearing a battered sign reading The Merry Dolphin to avoid being crushed, only for the adjacent earth wall to collapse, pouring soil over her in a simulated burial.

Recognizing the ordeal as a recreation of Havoc’s nightmare, Neema steadies her breathing, braces the collapsing earth with the boat sign, and fights panic as the space closes in. At the last moment the gears reverse, the shelves separate, and she falls free. Neema exits to an empty tunnel, calling for Cain, but finds no one, left alone to continue the Trial.
