Chapter Twenty-Six
Overview
Roman coordinates with Khalil to escalate the sabotage against the BBB by hitting an upcoming gun shipment and framing a rival motorcycle club. He then meets Shade, the true power above Torrent and Tranquil, who hires him to launder seven-figure sums under threat of death. At home, Dante reveals Cassidy wants to return, threatening to unravel everything, while Chauncey secretly photographs Roman in surveillance.
Summary
Roman meets with Khalil at the Carruthers home to update him on the long con against the Gilchrist brothers. Roman explains he's already extracted significant money through the inflated demolition contracts on Skids properties, paid Mayor Gravely his cut, and is set to meet the BBB's mysterious supplier. Khalil offers to hit an upcoming gun shipment from Roanoke and frame it on the Rare Breed motorcycle club to ratchet up pressure on Torrent. Roman, recalling that Torrent's people put his father in a vegetative state, tells Khalil to do whatever is necessary, even if men die.
At the Osman Hotel, Roman, Torrent, and Tranquil are taken up to a private rooftop bar to meet a man called Shade, an immaculately dressed power broker who reveals he is not the BBB's partner but their boss, having helped raise Torrent and Tranquil after their father Horace was incarcerated. Shade hires Roman to launder money for a corrupt Virginia Department of Emergency Management official who owes Shade's loan sharks gambling debts. Shade demands a fifty-percent return on seven-figure sums within three months, with implicit lethal consequences for failure. Roman accepts.
Walking back to the cars, Roman feigns ignorance and asks Torrent who Shade is. Torrent identifies him and bitterly notes that Shade, like the devil, has no friends.
Returning home, Roman finds Dante drinking and despondent because Tug's girlfriend Raynell has worsened. Dante drops a bombshell: Cassidy has contacted him asking to come home. Roman insists Cassidy must stay away because the BBB believe she is dead, and her return would expose the lies and get the entire family killed. Dante, fragile and guilt-ridden over the mounting body count, asks if Roman would hurt her; Roman swears he wouldn't but cannot vouch for Torrent and Tranquil. Dante promises to talk to her but insists they must protect her if she shows up.
Roman's assistant Keisha calls about a client, Lil Glock, who has been swindled out of four million dollars in a real estate scam. Roman heads to his father's place to handle it. Unseen, Chauncey sits in a parked sedan down the street, photographing Roman, his Challenger, and the license plate.
