Chapter Fourteen

Overview

Roman, Dante, and Khalil formalize a plan to destroy the Black Baron Boys from within. Rejecting Dante's pleas to pay or flee, Roman will infiltrate the gang by offering Getty's snitch status and proving his financial value, while Khalil attacks from outside and they leverage Yellaboy through mutual blackmail. The chapter cements Roman's transformation into a strategist willing to wage a covert war to protect his family.

Summary

Weldon Jackson of Jackson Brothers Funeral Home delivers a four-hundred-pound body to the Carruthers crematory. While he and Roman load the corpse, they catch up: Roman explains he'll be staying to help Neveah while their father remains comatose. Weldon mentions picking up Jacob 'J-Rock' Pettigrew, found by the train tracks with his legs mauled by dogs and a bullet in his head, the fourth such body this year. Weldon laments that Jefferson Run, once the country's top Mason jar producer, now produces only orphans and widows amid escalating gang violence between the Black Baron Boys and the Ghost Town Crew.

After cremating the body and replenishing the cash he gave Cassidy via ATM withdrawals, Roman returns home to find Khalil already inside; Dante is passed out on the couch, likely on opioids. Roman wakes Dante and introduces him to Khalil, explaining Khalil will help with their situation. Roman lays out the full story over a drink.

Khalil presents two options: open war on the BBB, or a counterinsurgency from within. Roman rejects all-out war because of the risk to Neveah, their father, and the business. They settle on a plan: Roman will infiltrate the BBB by offering up Getty's status as a snitch, prove his value by making them money through stock manipulation with Ms. Billings, and from inside turn the gang against itself by exploiting paranoia and greed. Khalil will strike from the outside, hitting stash houses and creating chaos.

Dante resists, suggesting they simply pay the debt or that he run away. Roman shuts this down forcefully, reminding Dante that the BBB tried to kill their father, took Dante's finger, and knocked out Roman's teeth. Khalil warns that Cassidy is a loose end and that Dante must explain Splodie's disappearance. Roman proposes leveraging Yellaboy through mutually assured destruction, since Yellaboy was somewhere he wasn't supposed to be that night. Dante is instructed to spread rumors that Splodie was taken by the Ghost Town Crew or entered Witness Protection.

Roman finalizes the plan: he will meet the BBB, hand over half of one hundred thousand dollars, and promise to triple their fifty-thousand-a-month tax through illicit market schemes, making himself indispensable. Invoking their father's chess lessons, he vows to use the BBB as pawns to take out their own kings, then sweep the pawns away. He bites down on ice with his new false teeth, savoring the pain.
