Chapter Five

Overview

Dante confesses to Roman that he owes the Black Baron Boys, led by Torrent and Tranquil, $300,000 for Molly and heroin he and his friends consumed or lost. Roman realizes these dealers slashed the crematory vans' tires and ran their father off the road. Taking charge as the older brother, Roman commits his savings and orders Dante to set up a meeting at the crematory to negotiate, raising the stakes dramatically.

Summary

Back at the house, a drunk Dante drinks more scotch and knocks over the dish rack, shattering dishes. Roman takes the bottle, shifting from his polished Atlanta CEO persona into 'Rome,' the older brother, and presses Dante to confess what is happening. Dante breaks down, admitting he's terrified and that things are 'so bad.'

In the living room, Dante confesses that he, his friend Getty, and Getty's girlfriend Cassidy planned to flip drugs at Hempstead College for easy money. Dante explains he wanted his own income despite Keith covering all his expenses, resenting having to work at the crematory. Roman quietly notes Dante's revisionist account but lets him talk.

Dante reveals he obtained $50,000 in Molly and $250,000 in heroin from the Black Baron Boys—run by Torrent and Tranquil, the men with braids and Afro from the club—who fronted the product based on Keith's reputation. Cassidy and Getty allegedly consumed the heroin, frat boys from Phi Delta Zeta jacked much of the Molly, and the trio used the rest themselves. The full $300,000 debt is owed.

Roman warns Dante that Getty likely lied since the debt is solely Dante's, citing money as 'acid' that destroys all bonds. He pieces together that Torrent and Tranquil slashed the crematory vans' tires and ran Keith off the road; Dante nods, confirming. The deadline was two weeks, and three weeks have already passed.

Roman decides to keep this from Neveah and orders Dante to arrange a meeting at the crematory the next night. He plans to use his savings and negotiate, reasoning that the dealers are sending messages, not yet killing. Dante alludes obliquely to a previous failed attempt to 'fix things,' wounding Roman, but Roman insists Dante make the call.
