Chapter Thirty

Overview

Dante learns Cassidy has recklessly returned to Jefferson Run from her motel hideout and is considering going to the police; he hides this from Roman. Jealousy breaks up with Roman after Tranquil reveals his money laundering for the BBB. Roman spots Cassidy driving Splodie's distinctive car through BBB territory and instructs Khalil to make her leave town—by any means necessary, including murder.

Summary

Dante wakes to find a landscaping crew Roman hired working on the yard. He chats with Ike Randolph, the large, intimidating crew leader, who shares that his son and best friend have died and urges Dante to talk to his family before it's too late, warning him not to wait. Dante is shaken by the encounter, calling himself the family disappointment.

Driving to meet Cassidy at her motel hideout in Aruna, Dante learns she has left and gone to her mother's house in Jefferson Run because she was lonely. Cassidy suggests going to the police, claiming self-defense for killing Splodie. Dante, terrified, vomits on the roadside, then begs her to return to the motel and not call the cops. She reluctantly agrees. Dante turns around, deciding he will wait for her call but will not tell Roman she came back.

Meanwhile, Roman waits outside city hall for Jealousy. When he calls her, she tearfully confronts him: her brother Tracy/Tranquil told her Roman launders money for the BBB and is being recruited into the crew. She breaks up with him, refusing to have blood on her hands. Roman lies that he's helping her brothers go straight, but she ends the call. Roman, devastated, vows revenge against Tranquil.

At Cooper's Rest, Roman drinks scotch and contemplates his predicament. As he leaves, he spots Splodie's distinctive Honda driving through BBB territory—Cassidy is back in town. He calls Dante, who feigns ignorance but Roman recognizes the lie. Roman orders Dante to get her to leave immediately.

Roman then meets Khalil at a gutted warehouse in the Skids. He explains that if Torrent sees Cassidy in Splodie's car, all three Carruthers siblings will die. Roman asks Khalil to scare Cassidy into leaving town. When Khalil presses him on what to do if she refuses, Roman, after a heavy pause, tells Khalil to do whatever it takes to make her disappear—signaling he will have her killed if necessary to protect his family.
