Chapter Sixteen

Overview

Roman uses a failed BDSM session to prepare for a high-stakes meeting with Torrent and Tranquil, where he pitches a stock-fraud scheme to flip $50,000 into $150,000 in a week, gaining a foothold inside the BBB. He survives a tense interrogation about Splodie's disappearance by aligning his story with Yellaboy's lie, securing both Torrent's tentative trust and dangerous leverage over Yellaboy.

Summary

Roman prepares for a 1 P.M. meeting with Torrent and Tranquil at Trout's restaurant, carrying a briefcase containing $100,000 in cash and a box holding the cremains of Getty and Splodie. He arrives early and stops at a motel, where he has booked a session with an inexperienced sex worker named Naia, hoping that his usual ritual of submission and pain will give him clarity before the meeting. The session fails because the woman cannot navigate his specific BDSM scenario, and Roman reflects with worry on his growing dependence on these encounters as a coping mechanism for guilt over his missing mother.

Frustrated and without his needed release, Roman drives to Trout's, an upscale soul food restaurant in Old Town. He steels himself, framing the encounter as a high-stakes sales pitch in the spirit of Glengarry Glen Ross, reminding himself these men aren't partners but targets he intends to destroy from within.

Inside a back office, Tranquil holds a gun on Roman as he presents only $50,000 plus the box of ashes, breaking the original agreement. Roman pitches a plan to flip the remaining $50,000 into $150,000 within a week using a pump-and-dump scheme and illegal short selling based on insider information. Torrent, intrigued by the prospect of laundering and growing his money, agrees, warning that failure means being taken to "the farm."

As Roman is about to leave, Torrent springs a test: he asks where Splodie is, revealing that Yellaboy claimed Splodie disappeared. Roman calmly maintains his story that Splodie and Yellaboy left together after dropping off Getty and Cassidy. He also volunteers that a cop told Dante that Getty was a confidential informant, framing the killing as justified. Yellaboy backs Roman's account, lying that the Carruthers brothers got their hands dirty.

Roman recognizes Yellaboy was somewhere he shouldn't have been the night Splodie died, giving him leverage. Exchanging numbers with Yellaboy, Roman silently signals him to keep quiet. Roman exits envisioning Torrent's entire crew gunned down, having successfully gotten his foot in the door of the operation he plans to burn to the ground.
