Chapter Three

Overview

Roman settles into his father's house and reunites with his troubled younger brother Dante, who arrives home high and emotionally raw. Their conversation exposes lingering grief over their mother Bonita's 2003 disappearance and Dante's strained relationship with their distant father. Roman pressures Dante to visit Keith in the hospital and ultimately agrees to drive him to a local club, beginning to glimpse the depth of his brother's struggles.

Summary

Roman arrives at his father Keith's spacious modern farmhouse, the home Keith built after years of struggle as a grave digger while Bonita worked as a surgical tech. Roman recalls how his mother lived in the house only six months before vanishing without a trace after a night shift at Jefferson Run Memorial on June 6th, 2003. He pours himself some of his father's Macallan scotch and sits on the porch, brooding over the family's losses and the encroaching woods around the property.

Dante arrives home visibly high, driving erratically. The brothers embrace, and Roman notes how frail and thin Dante has become. Inside, Dante drinks straight from the scotch bottle. When Roman presses about whether their father's accident was deliberate, Dante deflects, complaining that Roman hasn't asked how he's doing. Dante reveals he recently broke up with his girlfriend Thalia and is struggling emotionally.

Looking at the old teddy bear cookie jar, Dante opens up about missing their mother, lamenting that their father never expresses pride or affection, while Bonita's love was unconditional and genuine. Roman, moved but guarded, defends their father as a hard but good man who sacrificed for his children, and pressures Dante to visit Keith in the hospital before it's too late, determined not to repeat the regret of losing their mother without goodbye.

Dante agrees to visit the next day but insists on going out tonight to a club called Candy's on Millicent Avenue. Concerned about Dante's impaired state, Roman reluctantly agrees to drive him, and the brothers leave together, sharing a moment of genuine laughter for the first time since Roman's arrival.
