Chapter Fifteen
Overview
Neveah confronts Roman about his absentee patriarch act, and Roman recognizes how the family forced her into a maternal role, encouraging her to dream of traveling to Africa. Chauncey calls to warn that Getty's CI status entangles Dante with the Black Baron Boys and Ghost Town Crew, then propositions her. Neveah resolves to secretly fix her brothers' mess, accepting she will never escape Jefferson Run.
Summary
Neveah arrives home and finds Roman and Dante with a stranger, Khalil, whom Roman introduces as a college friend visiting from Richmond. Khalil leaves graciously, and Neveah briefly shares a moment of laughter with her brothers before remembering the loss of their mother and shutting down. She confirms with Roman that the body Weldon brought has been processed, then announces she's going to bed.
Roman pushes the idea that all three siblings should visit their comatose father together. Neveah snaps, accusing Roman of acting like a patriarch after years of absence and pointing out that she is the one who keeps the family and household functioning while he and Dante disappoint. Roman privately tells Dante they must keep the Black Baron Boys trouble away from Neveah. Dante warns Roman to leave her alone, then medicates himself with Percocets.
Roman follows Neveah to her room, where he notices her wildlife photos and map of Africa. He encourages her to travel, offering to come home and shoulder responsibilities so she can take time off, and admits the family wrongly forced her into a maternal role. Neveah is moved but skeptical. Roman warns her against her cop "friend" Chauncey, recognizing him as married and untrustworthy. Neveah asks about Khalil; Roman lies with selective truths, privately acknowledging Khalil is a dangerous killer.
After Roman leaves, Chauncey calls. He warns that Getty was a confidential informant double-dipping between the Black Baron Boys (linked to Shade Sinclair) and the Ghost Town Crew (linked to MS-13), and urges Neveah to bring Dante in. He then casually invites her over since his wife is away. Neveah reflects bitterly on her father's secrets, her vanished mother, and her fierce love for her brothers, resolving to fix the situation herself. She agrees to come to Chauncey's, accepting she will never escape to Africa.
