Chapter Thirty-Two
Overview
Summary
On his way to a meeting with Shade in Richmond, Roman stops by the hospital and discovers staff packing up Keith's belongings for transfer to a convalescent home. He demands the move be halted and tries reaching Neveah, who finally answers from her vacation. She defends her decision: Keith's insurance is running out, the doctors offer no hope, and she refuses to sacrifice her life caring for him, especially given her suspicion that Keith burned their mother in the crematory. Roman insists the family should decide together, but Neveah tells him to handle it himself.
Roman returns home to find Dante drunk and high on the couch. Their argument escalates as Dante blames Roman for Cassidy's death and accuses him of enjoying his criminal role. Roman fires back that Dante's repeated failures caused Cassidy's death and Keith's coma. When Dante tries to invoke their mother's death as his "original sin," Roman violently grabs his throat, refusing to ever discuss it. He apologizes, tells Dante he's not a fuckup, and promises to keep them safe. Dante quietly says goodbye as Roman leaves.
Roman calls Chauncey, offering to wear a wire and set up a sting at a warehouse in the Skids, claiming Torrent, Tranquil, and a GTC representative will meet there for a truce. Chauncey agrees to come alone with recording equipment in exchange for his money. Roman thinks of him as "the rook."
At Trout's, Roman feeds Torrent a different story: that a GTC member named Carlos Veracruz tried to recruit him to meet his boss Ernesto at the same warehouse at nine. Tranquil argues the GTC is already dying, but Torrent decides to cut off the head and orders Roman to return at eight so they can ambush Ernesto together.
Roman drives to the crematory, retrieves his father's gun from the safe, and stands beneath the skylight praying for his mother's protection and for his siblings' safety. He texts Khalil to confirm everything is set, then speeds off into the night, having engineered a collision between Torrent's crew, the GTC, and Chauncey.
