Chapter 23
Overview
Adrift in a windless calm, Brynn battles thirst and creeping delirium until Acker coaxes her to rest beside him, strengthening their fragile trust. Acker reveals his keen sense of smell and teases away Brynn’s fear. Awakened by a sky of mirrored stars, they swim in the still sea, finding rare wonder and peace before sleeping.
Summary
Brynn drifts in a windless sea, forcing herself not to dwell on thirst and on thoughts of Kai’s schemes. Delirium nips at her as she imagines worst-case outcomes, even fearing Blue might turn predatory. Her gasp wakes Acker, who gently insists she rest.
Despite Brynn’s belief that sleep feels like surrender, Acker jokes about her refusal to give up and urges her to lie beside him. In the cramped boat they share close quarters, and Acker offers his arm as a pillow, breaking tension with teasing. He explains his keen sense of smell—sometimes able to distinguish individuals—and says Brynn smells like Kenta’s wildflowers beneath the grime, nudging their rapport toward trust.
They fall asleep until Acker rouses Brynn to witness a windless night strewn with stars so dense the sea mirrors the sky. The boat and ocean seem suspended, creating a sphere of light in all directions.
On impulse, Acker dives in to “swim with the stars,” and Brynn follows, shedding modesty for wonder. Blue circles once and returns to perch, as if sharing in the moment. Floating in silence, Brynn and Acker savor the calm until exhaustion returns. They climb back aboard, fall asleep in damp clothes, and end the night with renewed intimacy and fragile hope.
