Chapter 5
Overview
Brynn returns home, cleans up, and confronts lingering guilt by sketching the Kenta soldier who spared her. Kai arrives with news that Aurora will be released to expose the supposed uprising. Brynn argues turning themselves in; Kai refuses and reasserts their betrothal. Their commitment deepens with a decisive, intimate kiss.
Summary
At dusk, Brynn wakes and takes a long, restorative shower, reflecting on grime from weeks away. A familiar black bird visits her windowsill, drawing a complaint from neighbor Grenadine, whom Brynn placates with a coin. From her rooftop, Brynn surveys the grove and worries about two years without Market trade.
To process the Market chaos, Brynn sketches the dark-eyed Kenta soldier she glimpsed kneeling, whose gaze had silently urged her to stop. She focuses on capturing his eyes, losing track of time as the memory anchors her conflicted feelings.
Near midnight, Kai climbs up from Brynn’s window. He reports that, unable to extract more by force, leadership plans to release Aurora, hoping she will lead them to the rumored uprising. Brynn is surprised and questions the risk.
The conversation turns to Kenta’s demands. Brynn argues that surrendering herself and Aurora could prevent widespread hunger; Kai rejects the idea, refusing to gamble with her life and insisting capitulation would invite future demands. Their disagreement exposes his fear for Brynn and her willingness to sacrifice for their people.
When Kai asks if marrying him is truly worse than surrender, Brynn admits marriage wasn’t in her plan but listens as he promises their roles will remain the same, only now together. The tension resolves as they acknowledge their bond; Kai initiates a deliberate, tender kiss, and Brynn responds with growing certainty, inwardly affirming yes to their future.
