Chapter 6

Gramble berates the near-graduates for complacency and orders a punishing left-side melee. Brynn fends off Paul’s taunts and defeats him, then teams with Aurora to drop Lawson, sending him to run laps. Messer outlasts Philipe and faces a feral Aurora, disarming her; she accepts the result and begins her laps.

Captain Wren, Dupre, and Kai arrive from observation. At their order, Messer and Willard spar with real swords supplied by Dupre. After a grueling exchange, Messer pressures Willard over the line and wins. Wren names that each class needs a commander and Kai presents a ceremonial command sword to Messer.

Messer declines the honor, insisting he must beat “the best” first—Brynn. To enable the match, Kai breaks tradition by lending Brynn his personal sword, signaling deep trust and allegiance. Brynn and Messer enter the ring, both anticipating each other’s counters, trading relentless strikes in a balanced, instinct-driven duel.

As fatigue sets in, Messer exploits a brief opening, scoring Brynn’s arm and driving her back. Cornered near the line, Brynn attempts a rollover reversal, but Messer arrests his momentum by planting his blade, trapping her and forcing defeat. The arena stays subdued as Kai presents Messer the command sword, which Messer accepts “to be Alaha.”

Brynn returns Kai’s weapon, and Kai, declaring pride in his match, kisses her publicly. The gesture defies rules and effectively outs their relationship, promising consequences even as Messer’s leadership is secured.
