Chapter 31
Overview
Jovie’s awakening intensifies as she manifests a light-wielding gift and learns to calm it with Acker’s help. Fia’s family kneels, confirming Jovie’s status as an Heir, while lore hints a past light wielder ruled harshly. Jovie and Acker leave alone toward the Dark Forest, deepen trust, and experience a burgeoning mind link.
Summary
Preparing to depart Fia’s clearing, Jovie panics at the size of the horse and begins to glow. Fia identifies her as a light wielder. Acker guides Jovie to locate and calm her magic, preventing another flare and easing her fear. Fia, Jorgen, and Sven kneel in reverence before Jovie, though Acker pointedly refuses.
After brief goodbyes, Acker mounts behind Jovie and they set off west, keeping near the Dark Forest and planning to go south to avoid trolls. Jorgen’s illusion conceals the cottage as they leave, and Blue accompanies them overhead. Hours of silent travel soften their proximity; Jovie leans into Acker as her post-awakening energy ebbs.
They address Vad’s revelation that Jovie had been dying; Acker admits he withheld it out of fear and promises full honesty going forward. Jovie intermittently slips into Acker’s perspective, glimpsing his view and sensations, hinting at a nascent mental connection born of her awakening.
At a stream, Acker explains healer zealotry and the elemental myth of Mother Nature’s four children and the human governors of those elements—Heirs. He adds that the last light wielder ruled the elements and was unkind, underscoring the stakes of Jovie’s power and reputation. Despite that shadow, Acker refuses to kneel and insists Jovie is not evil.
Intimacy grows as they exchange lingering looks and quiet touches, but they hold the line. The chapter closes with Acker brushing hair from Jovie’s face and declaring his belief that she will bring peace to Kenta, crystallizing their renewed trust and shared direction.
