Chapter 8

Brynn meets Messer on the veranda and notices fresh bruises he attributes to being caught sneaking out by his father. They worry over the silent Kenta ship offshore and the tight cordon around the north tower, confirming the prisoner remains held. Brynn confesses she kept the Kenta soldier’s black blade; Messer insists she dispose of it.

On the way to training, the grove feels subdued. Messer briefly plays with children to lift spirits, making them late. At the paddocks, Gramble penalizes them with conditioning. Dupre arrives and pulls Brynn to Captain Wren, who asks her to speak with the Kenta prisoner since he will talk only to her, seeking intelligence on the Kenta armada’s location.

Kai accompanies Brynn into the brig but must surrender his sword and a prohibited concealed dagger, displeasing Wren. Inside the foul cell, the battered soldier greets Brynn, pointedly acknowledging her presence. He needled Kai about Brynn’s scent in the cell and apologizes to Brynn for the Market incident, then suggests her own people harm her, trying to provoke distrust.

Sticking to Wren’s aim, Brynn asks about the armada. The soldier states the largest force is moored in Oldtide Bay, with rotating ships at the Market and at sea. Kai, apparently satisfied, leads Brynn out. As they leave, the soldier addresses Brynn by name with unsettling familiarity, signaling continued interest and potential future manipulation.
