Chapter 10

Overview

On graduation day, a blue flag storm threatens the grove and the brig holding Acker. The Kenta ship disappears, and Captain Wren intends to let Acker drown. Messer’s match to Aurora is revealed. Defying orders, Brynn braves the storm, magically recalls the lost dagger, breaks the brig’s seal, and frees Acker, who names her Jovie.

Summary

At graduation, Commander Johannes and Danuh greet Brynn, while tension simmers with Messer’s family. Callom’s blue storm flag raises alarm, threatening catastrophic flooding before the Matching Ceremony. Captain Wren presides as Brynn is pinned, but the building storm and fear for the imprisoned Kenta soldier, Acker, unsettle her.

After the ceremony, Messer reveals his parents have matched him to Aurora, surprising Brynn but exposing Messer’s desire to escape his parents’ control. A sudden discovery—the Kenta ship is gone—prompts Wren to cancel celebrations. In private, Kai admits Wren ordered guards to abandon posts at ten-foot swells, effectively condemning Acker.

Torn but resolute, Brynn decides there is one hiding place no one will check and races to the brig in the rising storm. Battling surging water, she confronts Acker, who refuses to manipulate her for survival. As waves flood the cell, he instructs her to “call” the dagger she threw into the sea, claiming it belongs to her.

Amid the deluge, Brynn centers herself, envisions the seafloor, and miraculously summons the dagger into her hand. Acker urges her to use its stone to break a hidden seal on the cell door. After repeated submersions and mounting panic, Brynn finds the seal; the door releases under the pressure and current.

They surface atop the brig, gasping. In a desperate moment underwater, Acker calls Brynn’s true name—Jovie—hinting at a deeper truth. On the roof, Acker snaps his shackles apart with raw strength. With the storm howling and the grove flooding, they prepare to risk the sea and escape.
