Chapter 25

Overview

Acker and Jovie reach a black-sand shore Acker identifies as Roison territory, risking a fragile peace if discovered. Despite the danger, they land to treat Acker’s infection. Jovie’s awakening erupts into unbearable pain from sea to soil, forcing Acker to carry her inland. He finds a palliative herb, and Jovie collapses into sleep.

Summary

As a black-sand shoreline looms, Acker tensely identifies it as Roison territory, warning that Chryse’s lawlessness and a fragile peace treaty make it dangerous. Jovie argues they cannot risk turning back at sea with dwindling supplies and Acker’s infection. Acker concedes to land but orders stealth upon arrival.

They strike the sail, gather essentials, and row in at night. When Jovie enters the surf, the water scorches her alone—an onset of her awakening. She fights to reach shore, only to find the sand and land worsen the agony, sending her into panic.

Acker lifts Jovie and carries her past rocks to sparse woods, keeping to cover while Blue circles low. He insists the only path is through the awakening’s torment and lays her down despite her pleas, muffling her screams to avoid detection.

Overwhelmed by pain and blinding light, Jovie struggles to control her body as her magic roils beneath her sternum like a punishment. Acker apologizes repeatedly and searches nearby, returning with a leafy plant and water. He cradles her, has her chew the herb, and soothes her until she finally slips into exhausted sleep.
