Chapter 4
Overview
The crew returns to Alaha amid celebratory preparations, but Captain Wren immediately has Aurora detained. In a tense debrief, Wren alleges an internal uprising and reveals Kenta demanded Brynn and Aurora be surrendered. Wren refuses by declaring Brynn betrothed to Kai and buys time to root out dissent as trade is delayed two years.
The decision shields Brynn but corners her into a political marriage, straining relationships and raising stakes for Alaha’s survival.
Summary
The ship returns to Alaha’s treeborne city as residents prepare festivities. Brynn, Kai, and Messer banter nervously while dreading Captain Wren’s summons. Upon arrival at Wren’s quarters, the giant commander Dupre shackles Aurora without resistance and escorts her to the brig, signaling serious accusations pending.
Inside, Wren and his wife Faline greet the trainees. Wren orders a full account of the Market incident. Brynn recounts the Kenta soldier’s false accusation and detention, her defensive use of his dagger, and Aurora’s explosion enabling escape. Kai and Messer corroborate, with Messer admitting he struck the soldier out of concern for Brynn.
Pressed on why Brynn was alone, Kai reveals he proposed marriage and Brynn needed time to process. Wren then discloses sensitive intelligence: Aurora is suspected of joining a small Alahan uprising aiming to disrupt the peace treaty. Kenta, asserting breach, demands Brynn and Aurora be turned over.
Kai refuses outright. Wren counters that he has already denied Kenta by declaring Brynn betrothed to Kai, framing the incident as self-defense while he investigates dissent at home. Trade will be delayed two years, risking shortages but buying time.
Dismissed under strict secrecy, Messer worries Aurora may face exile if she remains uncooperative. Outside, Brynn and Kai clash over her lack of agency; Brynn leaves exhausted and conflicted, feeling cornered between a political marriage and surrender to Kenta.
