Chapter 18

Overview

Adrift with little wind and water, Brynn and Acker fish and share guarded pieces of Acker’s past, deepening their bond. A midnight-blue raptor arrives—Acker identifies it as a legendary eyun—revealing it is tame to Brynn. After the bird devours their catch whole, Brynn names it Blue and negotiates rules, adding a volatile ally to their survival.

Summary

With little wind and mounting thirst, Brynn and Acker take turns managing the tiller and fishing lines. Acker’s blood-soaked shirt dries while he rigs small-reef gear, and the pair share watch-worn fatigue. Conversation turns personal: Acker credits his friend Hallis for teaching him to fish, admits he joined the army against his noble father’s political plans, and reveals his mother died when he was twelve and his sister now mothers him.

When Brynn probes about Acker’s rare magical match, a midnight-blue bird lands on the stern. Acker reacts defensively, reaching for a dagger, but Brynn tackles him to protect the bird she once nursed in Alaha. Acker identifies the creature as an eyun, a supposedly mythic man-eater from Second Sun tales, while Brynn insists it is harmless to her.

They return to fishing and land a pomper, but the bird swoops down, stretches its beak impossibly wide, and swallows the fish whole, shocking both Brynn and Acker. Acker warns Brynn to keep it away from him and their food. Recognizing the bird has tracked her across the sea, Brynn names it Blue and proposes a bargain: they will portion food for Blue if it stops stealing their catch—and it must not eat Acker.

Blue clicks in apparent agreement and perches above, leaving the trio in a fragile new equilibrium: limited resources, a nascent trust between Brynn and Acker, and a powerful, unpredictable companion now bound by Brynn’s tentative pact.
