Chapter 22

Overview

Adrift, starving, and dehydrated, Brynn and Acker use humor to cope as exhaustion mounts. Acker sleeps through the night, revealing their limits. Brynn confronts him about an apparently infected wound; he downplays the risk and urges her to rest. Brynn finally sleeps, preserving strength but leaving his health uncertain.

Summary

Adrift without food, with scant water and no clear course, Brynn and Acker pass time with would-you-rather banter to blunt hunger and anxiety. The empty lines confirm the fish have vanished since the storm, and the oppressive clouds and humidity sap their strength.

Through the night, Brynn mans the lines and compass alone while Acker sleeps heavily on deck. By morning, Acker realizes he slept through the entire night, surprising them both and underscoring their exhaustion.

Concerned, Brynn presses Acker about his side wound, which she saw in the water the day before and believes is infected. Acker admits he used the last of the salve and tries to deflect with humor, then insists it will heal once they reach land.

Their exchange sharpens into conflict: Brynn fears a coming fever and the uncertainty of landfall; Acker counters with calm confidence, claiming he has survived worse and that worry will not help. His reassurance softens Brynn’s anger.

Acker gently urges Brynn to rest, noting the mind’s tricks when overtired. Reluctantly, Brynn yields to sleep, signaling a fragile trust and a necessary shift to conserve their dwindling strength.
